A small region on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, located in the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, famously called ‘Pulmones de La Tierra’ – the ‘Lungs of the Earth’ is a cozy, petite bohemian town tucked away within the sphere of Cabuya, Cabo Blanco, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. Communities settled within this realm embrace a culture of individual, independent living based on health and wellness.

The Nicoya Peninsula was home to several indigenous groups, including the Chorotega people. They were skilled farmers and artisans, with a culture influenced by Mesoamerican civilizations. The peninsula served as a trade hub, linking Central and South America. Although much of the indigenous population was displaced or assimilated after the Spanish conquest, their cultural legacy still lingers in the region. The Spanish colonization of Costa Rica in the 16th century brought significant changes to the area. While the Nicoya Peninsula was not as heavily colonized as other parts of Costa Rica, the Spanish introduced cattle ranching and agriculture, which became the backbone of the economy. The region remained sparsely populated for centuries due to its relative isolation and limited infrastructure. Montezuma began as a small fishing village in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally known as "Puntarenas" before being renamed Montezuma, possibly as a nod to the legendary Aztec emperor Montezuma.

The town remained relatively quiet and off the beaten path until the mid-20th century. In the 1980s, Montezuma's pristine beaches, lush jungles, and waterfalls started attracting international travelers, particularly backpackers, artists, and nature lovers. Its reputation as a bohemian and eco-friendly destination grew rapidly. The development of nearby nature reserves, such as Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve (Costa Rica's first national park, established in 1963), further boosted its appeal.
